Acne
While some new mums have perfectly clear complexions after giving birth, others can be stunned to find they struggle with acne.
“Acne is triggered by hormonal changes, which is why it can develop during pregnancy or postnatal. When you become pregnant, your body releases a surge of progesterone, which causes an increase in sebum production that can clog pores. This again peaks in the third trimester so you may experience skin problems after giving birth,” explained Dr. Pamela Benito. “Hopefully, acne should only last for a short time and disappear on its own, but if you do and it persists consider targeted skincare products such as the ZO Acne Control with 10 per cent benzoyl peroxide – a topical antibiotic that is not absorbed by the skin into the bloodstream. However, be mindful if you are still breastfeeding as you should be careful of certain ingredients such as retinoids and salicylic acid over two per cent.”
